Western Australia gets a "Fail" when it comes to Climate Change

The release of the CSIRO's annual State of the Climate 2012 report highlights the continued impacts of Climate Change on Australia.

Climate change poses the greatest threat to our world in human history and requires urgent local, national and global action.

“The State of WA refuses to comprehend that they need to play a responsible part in reducing emissions,” said WA Greens MP Robin Chapple. “Whilst the rest of the world are making various levels of commitment in the race to reduce or minimise CO2e emissions, West Australia is racing in the opposite direction.”

Mr Chapple, the MLC for the Mining and Pastoral Region, said Referenced Data acquired from WA EPA reports and the industry over the last year shows that WA has nearly doubled its emissions since the 1995 baseline.

“When projected industry developments are concluded Western Australia will have tripled its baseline figure. This data, which is alarming already, is far from complete and would suggest that the true position may be significantly worse than can be identified.”

“We are seeing the peaks of climate change reality being played out across the nation in exactly the way our Nations top scientist are identifying in the Climate 2012 report.”

“We have only 10-15 years to use our collective human intelligence to address the crisis of climate change and to prevent a catastrophe.”

“Western Australia must be dragged kicking and screaming back into line, or face be ostracised by the rest of the world,” said Mr Chapple, the WA Greens Climate Change spokesperson.
