Sacred art continues to be vandalised

Tuesday, 2 February

The continual vandalising of ancient Indigenous rock art in the Burrup peninsula has reached crisis point, says Greens MLC Robin Chapple.

“I have recently found out that more rock art has been tagged in the Burrup, this desecration has to stop” Mr Chapple said.

“This 40,000 year old art is being destroyed because it has zero protection, something I have endlessly pushed the government to address.”

“A DAA office should be established in the Burrup to monitor the situation, Murujuga rangers need more power to prosecute and mining companies need to educate their employee’s on the significance of the site.”

“If the government introduced these simple measures they would go a long way in showing they care about preservation.”

“I can only hope this latest desecration highlights the urgency of the situation, the government needs to start acting now.”
