Robin Chapple MLC, Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region, and Greens WA spokesperson for Climate Change and Energy policy, today welcomed the findings of the Shell Australia “Future Energy Survey 2013” report. “This company can hardly be described as Green fellow-travellers, which lends even more credibility to their findings”, Mr Chapple observed.
“The report confirms that over 60% of West Australians are saying that we should be REDUCING OUR CO2 EMISSIONS”, said Mr Chapple.
“This result reinforces the Greens determination to continue espousing our long-held policies on reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, by sensible, sustainable measures to make the switch to renewable energy, such as those described in our recently-launched “Energy 2029 plan”, he continued.
“The Shell report also reveals that over 90% think solar is the way to go, and three-quarters also support wind power – in stark contrast to their elected Barnett/Grylls government, where it seems none of them share the views of their constituents. You only have to look at the Government’s list of approved resource projects to find the proof – when these projects get going (using current, outdated power generation), WA’s GHG emissions will treble from current levels”, Mr Chapple said.
“Unfortunately, the alternative McGowan government is no better – we have not heard a peep out of them on climate change or renewable energy policy”, a disappointed Mr Chapple continued.
“Only the Greens stand fully in support of the clearly-expressed demands of the WA people. I challenge the other parties to state clearly where they stand in relation to reducing WA’s GHG emissions, or face the consequences of defying the wishes of two-thirds of the voters.”, Mr Chapple concluded.
