26th May 2009 - Jeff Kennett’s recent comments on local government amalgamation were undemocratic and unwelcome in Western Australia, Greens (WA) MLC Robin Chapple said today.
“Local government is the form of government that people have the most contact with and as such it is a vital element in our democracy,” said Mr. Chapple.
“For Mr. Kennett to advocate diluting the link between voters and local government is undemocratic and an unwelcome intrusion into the debate on this issue.”
“Mr. Kennett should refrain from dictating to the State of Western Australia as to how it manages its local governments.”
Mr. Chapple said that local governments play an important and often unheralded role in communities across Western Australia and should be supported rather than denigrated.
