Greens MP Robin Chapple says the East Pilbara Link is a Breath of Fresh Air

Alinta Energy is considering an energy project that could turn the dream of a Pilbara electricity grid into a reality.

The Pilbara, a prime solar resource, is currently a major energy user and greenhouse gas emissions producer, owing to a large degree to the volume of non-renewable energy sources that mining companies consume to power plant.

Robin Chapple, Greens Member for Mining and Pastoral has congratulated Alinta Energy on its innovation and foresight in attempting to address this major environmental and social issue.

“Finally we see an energy retailer willing to invest in the future of this state and to go beyond ‘business-as-usual’ to see the benefits in powering the Pilbara with renewable energy.

“Alinta are to be congratulated. It seems that where our state owned energy utilities are failing to meet expectation, independent energy companies are stepping in with vision to fill the gaps. Ensuring our state has access to clean, green energy by creating an integrated grid system which not only allows full access for renewables, but ensures appropriate gas back-up can be sourced when required is genius. If this project comes to fruition it will significantly reduce the currently ridiculous greenhouse gas emissions profile attributable to the mining industry,”  said Mr Chapple.

“I truly hope Alinta can see this concept through to completion and that the state will support this valuable project.”
