Greens Cautiously Welcome Alinta and Alcoa Energy Efficiency

July 3, 2002 - Greens (WA) energy spokesperson, Robin Chapple MLC, today welcomed the initiative of Alcoa and AlintaGas to develop co-generation power plants in WA.

'This proposal certainly looks at the issues of how to make existing fossil fuel use more energy-efficient, but does not make any provision for the development of renewable energy,' said Mr Chapple

This process, though welcomed, must not be seen as a panacea to our spiralling Greenhouse emissions; only a dedicated commitment to allow the development of the renewable energy industry will do this.

We welcome this sort of thermal efficiency by a black power provider as it is at least double that of the recently proposed Griffin South West Power Project.

'Strategically, Government must allocate quotas to Coal, Gas and Renewables on an equitable basis and evaluate all project developments against environmental harm (NOx and SOx) and against Greenhouse emissions,' concluded Mr Chapple.
