State Funding for Kalgoorlie Dome is Gilding the Lily

19 June 2013

Greens WA member for the Mining and Pastoral Region, Robin Chapple MLC, today called on the state government to be resolute over its damaging dispute with Kalgoorlie’s Gild the Dome committee.

“What a nonsense this is – a well-funded group of mining entrepreneurs crying poor at the last minute, after raising community hopes over their grandiose scheme to decorate the Warden’s Court.

“This folly was entirely of their own making – there was no heritage value in the proposal, and no groundswell of public support.  An objective observer might see it as a classic delusion of grandeur.

“We’ve gone from them offering all the cash and gold needed – to them now pleading with the Premier to step in and bail them out!

“For them to now turn around and plead for government funding is laughable – one can only think they have become so used to Royalties for Regions money flowing in for just about any pet project they want, that critical judgment was completely thrown out the door with this one!

“I urge the Attorney-General to stand firm and resist any moves for taxpayer’s funds to be given to this financially robust group – to avoid any further damage to the state’s fiscal credibility”, concluded Mr Chapple.
