With so much negative rhetoric from the conservatives about the carbon tax over the past couple of years the news that carbon emissions from the energy sector have reduced significantly in the first six months of the scheme has come as positive news to Labor, Green and Independents.
A hefty 8.6 percent fall in carbon emissions over six short months shows that the Clean Energy Futures package, that the Australian Greens fought doggedly to have passed into legislation, is indeed delivering on its promises. Total emissions from the electricity sector in the December half were 7.5 million tonnes lower than in the same half of 2011.
Analysis shows there has also been a big change in the mix of power, with much greater use of renewable energy from hydroelectricity from the Snowy Mountains and Tasmania, and also wind farms, while there have been cuts in use of both black and brown coal.
Robin Chapple, Greens WA spokesperson for climate change said today:
“This truly is the perfect example of ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’. The Commonwealth has enacted good solid policy, with the support of the Greens and some forward thinking Independents, and not only did the sky not fall, it actually got just a little brighter for the reduced pollution. I call this a win for common sense.
“All I can say is so much for Mr Abbott’s ‘big fat tax’, the ruin of a nation. Looks like we’ll get that clean, green future for our children despite his single message troll campaign. Mr Abbott might have to find a new tune to sing, and it wouldn’t do Mr Barnett any harm to jump into a more positive, proactive harmony either.”
