A Bill introducing new offences for protest action has been the topic of heated debate for several days of this three week sitting period. Lynn expressed our opposition to the Criminal Code Amendment (Prevention of Lawful Activity) Bill 2015 in a four hour speech. The drawn out debate enabled civil society to intensify their opposition. Opposition has grown from forest protectors and peace activists to include human rights and criminal lawyers. Debate is ongoing with a referral motion by the Greens for this to go to Committee now under consideration.
A Committee Report’s majority recommendation to trial recreational hunting in a southwest State Forest and a reclaimed pastoral station was hotly debated with a backdrop of protests from pro- and anti-hunting groups. Lynn spoke at the anti-hunting rally on the steps and in the Council chamber called on the Government to reject the recommendation.
Robin has started his contribution to the Indigenous Suicides debate, this will continue in April.
The Aboriginal Heritage Amendment Bill 2014 has not started being debated in Legislative assembly yet, both Robin and Lynn are preparing to do whatever we can to stop this horrendous legislation from being passed.
Robin gave notice to introduce the “Mining (Community Protection) Amendment Bill 2015” This Bill seeks to address community concerns about the capacity of the Mining Act 1978 to override local or regional planning schemes.
After two years of controversy, the Government passed regulations (School Education Amendment Regulations 2014) which permit school fees to be charged for families with 457 visas. During that period, a hardship provision was introduced and two inquiries were held. Robin’s Delegated Legislation Committee Report concluded the fee was beyond the power of the Director General of Education. Lynn, who has campaigned against the fee since its announcement, urged the Government to abandon the charge and warned that it may be challenged in court.
Robin gave a stirring speech at the Close the Gap, not the Communities protest rally before the passionate crowd of 2000. He also introduced a motion on Stolen Wages.
The Gene Technology (Western Australia) Bill 2014 and the Electricity Corporations Amendment Bill 2015 are still being debated.
Also on the front steps, university students protested Federal proposals for higher fees and invited Lynn to speak.
